A new poster and trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald have been unveiled during Warner Bros.’ Hall H panel at Comic-Con, offering a first look at famed alchemist Nicolas Flamel. Check it out a poster except above, and an image of Flamel in the trailer below.
Nicolas Flamel is played by 55 year-old actor Brontis Jodorowsky (The Darkness), who has been considerably aged up for the role. Flamel is famous in Harry Potter lore for being the creator of the Philosopher’s Stone (also known as the Sorcerer’s Stone), a large red stone of immense power that grants immortality to the user. Voldemort fiercely pursued the Philosopher’s Stone in the first Harry Potter novel and film, hoping to use it to restore himself to life, so we may see Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) going after it as well. In the poster Flamel is seated next to an unknown character who is most likely his wife, Perenelle Flamel.

Flamel shows up at the very end of the trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, greeting extremely nervous No-Maj Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), who asks if Flamel is a ghost. Ghost explains that he’s alive, but an alchemist and therefore immortal, and Jacob tells him he doesn’t look “a day over 375.”
There’s a lot going on in the Crimes of Grindelwald trailer, which not only brings back many cast members from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (including, of course, Eddie Redmayne’s eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander), but also adds a wealth of new characters. Chief among them is Jude Law as a young Albus Dumbledore, who asks Newt to move against Grindelwald on his behalf, because he can’t fight him directly. Dumbledore and Flamel are very close friends in the books, so it makes sense that Dumbledore would recruit Flamel to help as well.
There are five Fantastic Beasts movies planned in total, and since Dumbledore and Grindelwald don’t even share any scenes in The Crimes of Grindelwald, we definitely won’t see the Dark Wizard vanquished once and for all in The Crimes of Grindelwald. Canonically, Dumbledore and Grindelwald were friends (and, according to author J.K. Rowling, romantically involved) when they were young, but parted ways after a duel between the Dumbledore brothers and Grindelwald inadvertently killed Dumbledore’s sister, Arianna. For decades afterwards Dumbledore was too wracked with guilt to face Grindelwald again, allowing the villain to rise to power and wreak terrible crimes upon the wizarding world.
