It&rsquo;s a cinema that apart from everything else popularised the classic scary-movie template: start off with a family tragedy, follow it with an apparently therapeutic recede or flee, an illusory easing of the sadness load, then pivot to a fright nightmare, in a way that the grotesque denouement appears to flower as a mysteriously logical escalation of that initial heartbreak. It&rsquo;s a shape taken up by Lars von Trier&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/antichrist\" title=\"\">Antichrist<\/a> and, this week, by Ari Aster&rsquo;s Midsommar.<\/p>\n<p>Julie Christie and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/donald-sutherland\" title=\"\">Donald Sutherland<\/a> play Laura and John, a sorrow pair whose young daughter has died in a freak accident.
