{"id":31471,"date":"2018-06-13T11:09:20","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T11:09:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ismartnetwork.co.uk\/?p=31471"},"modified":"2018-06-13T11:09:20","modified_gmt":"2018-06-13T11:09:20","slug":"naspers-is-in-talks-to-invest-in-southeast-asias-carousell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ismartnetwork.co.uk\/?p=31471","title":{"rendered":"Naspers is in talks to invest in Southeast Asia\u2019s Carousell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"crunchbase-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/naspers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"organization\" data-entity=\"naspers\">Naspers, <\/a> the South Africa-based firm that famously backed Chinese giant Tencent in its infancy, is in talks to invest in Singapore-based startup <a class=\"crunchbase-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/carousell\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"organization\" data-entity=\"carousell\">Carousell, <\/a> according to two sources with knowledge of discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Carousell offers a mobile app that combines listings with peer-to-peer selling across Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. That makes\u00a0it well-aligned with Naspers&#8217; portfolio, which features some of the world&#8217;s largest classifieds services including <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2010\/08\/26\/naspers-makes-strategic-investment-in-craigslist-competitor-olx\/\">OLX<\/a>, which covers 45 countries, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2015\/09\/03\/mobile-app-letgo-raises-100-million-from-naspers-to-take-over-classifieds-in-the-u-s\/\">Letgo in the U.S.<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2015\/10\/23\/naspers-buys-majority-stake-in-russian-classifieds-site-avito-for-1-2b\/\">Avito in Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>TechCrunch understands that Naspers is pursuing a deal with Carousell with a view to making it the firm&#8217;s key play in Southeast Asia and other parts of the APAC region.<\/p>\n<p>Discussions are at a relatively early stage so it isn&#8217;t clear what percentage of the company that Naspers is seeking to acquire, although it would be a minority investment that values the Carousell business at over $500 million. The deal could be a first step towards Naspers acquiring a controlling interest in the business further down the line, one source said.<\/p>\n<p>Carousell declined to respond when asked for comment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is our company\u2019s policy to neither acknowledge nor deny our involvement in any merger, acquisition or divestiture activity, nor to comment on market rumors,&#8221; Naspers told TechCrunch in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Timing of the discussions is notable since Carousell\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/05\/13\/carousell-raises-85m\/\">announced a $85 million investment round<\/a>\u00a0in May. (<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/10\/27\/carousell-series-c\/\">TechCrunch broke news of the round the previous October<\/a>.)\u00a0That deal &#8212; the startup&#8217;s Series C &#8212; took it to $126 million from investors to date and added big names to the\u00a0Carousell cap table.\u00a0EDBI, the corporate investment arm of Singapore\u2019s Economic Development Board, and Singapore&#8217;s DBS, Southeast Asia&#8217;s largest bank, took part in the Series C, which also included existing backers Rakuten Ventures, the VC linked to Japanese e-commerce giant <a class=\"crunchbase-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/rakuten\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"organization\" data-entity=\"rakuten\">Rakuten, <\/a> Golden Gate Ventures, Sequoia India and 500 Startups.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-06-04\/why-a-26-year-old-turned-down-100-million-offer-for-his-startup\">Carousell CEO and co-founder Siu Rui Quek told Bloomberg<\/a>\u00a0that the company had turned down acquisition offers in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Carousell is highly-regarded in Singapore for being one of the first home-grown startups to show promise &#8212; its three founding members each graduated the National University of Singapore, NUS.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from raising significant investor capital, it has scaled regionally it is battle against larger and better-funded e-commerce rivals <a class=\"crunchbase-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/alibaba\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"organization\" data-entity=\"alibaba\">Alibaba <\/a>-owned Lazada and Shopee, a business from NYSE-listed Sea. In May, Quek told TechCrunch that Carousell has helped sell over 50 million items between users and it currently has over 144 million listings.<\/p>\n<p>Naspers, meanwhile, has upped its focus on Southeast Asia in recent times, although its sole deal is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/05\/24\/naspers-coins-ph-unbanked-bitcoin-fintech\/\">a $5 million investment in crypto startup Coins.ph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The firm remains best known for its Tencent deal, which is legendary in investment circles.\u00a0Back in 2001, it bought 46.5 percent of Tencent for $32 million. Over time that was diluted to 33 percent, but it grew significantly in size as Tencent&#8217;s business took off, going on to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/11\/20\/tencent-500-billion\/\">become Asia&#8217;s first $500 billion company<\/a> last November.
